I. The Warrior and The Poet
This is not conventional, flowery poetry. This is Blake Sims, who writes as Blakes High Thoughts. He comes from the trenches, both in life and on the battlefield. Growing up in Cairo, Mississippi, and serving as an Army combat veteran in Afghanistan, Blake has faced a darkness most people only read about. He was injured, he lost brothers in arms, and he carried the weight of it all back home. Instead of being consumed by it, he chose to become a guiding light, transforming his pain into art that is genuinely saving lives.
II. From the Trenches to the Page
Blake’s thirteen years of service are a story of survival and resilience. In combat, he faced a life-or-death situation with a jammed rifle; he still keeps the bullet from that day as a reminder. But the battles don't always end when a soldier comes home. As he puts it, "while I was in Alaska, the mental health struggles I brought back from Afghanistan hit me hard." This brutal reality, compounded by the trauma of surviving childhood abuse and witnessing his friend Ronnie McNutt tragically take his own life on a Facebook Live stream, became the forge for his art. Medically retired, Blake is now penning a collection that chronicles a boy's journey to manhood through the unflinching lens of trauma and recovery.
